MOUNT VERNON — On Thursday morning, the Knox County Commissioners opened bids for paving and spot repairing roads in the county.
For the paving of certain county roads, Kokosing Construction bid $885,351.85. For the same paving project, Smalls Sand and Gravel bid $737,374.49. The county engineer’s estimate for the project was $924,222. The total length of county roads to be repaved is about 19.5 miles, and would include sections of Jelloway Road, Apple Valley Road, North Ridge Heights Road, Lock Road, Bloomfield Road, Deal Road and Sparta Road.
Bids for patching materials were also opened, and Kokosing bid $49.75 per ton of 448 asphalt, and $44 per ton of 448 asphalt which uses recycled materials. For the same project, Smalls Sand and Gravel Bid $45 for both types of asphalts. County roads that are on track to be spot-patched include Lower Fredericktown-Amity Road, Simmons Church Road, Fairview Road and Monroe Mills Road.
After the bids were opened, Commissioner Allen Stockberger asked Assistant Engineer Larry Betchel how the bids compared to the highway department’s estimates in terms of price per ton. Betchel said that the bids were very close to estimates.
The bids are now will be reviewed by the county engineer’s office, and after review will be submitted to the board of commissioners along with recommendations.
