Fredericktown discusses community center

FREDERICKTOWN — The Fredericktown Village Council began its meeting Monday by discussing a possible long-term lease of space by the planning committee of the future Fredericktown Community Center.

Councilman Alan Kintner told council that the creation of a special account to hold funds paid by residents to the village for sidewalk repair and construction may be a good idea. Council chose to table the idea until later this year, when next year’s budget is discussed.

Ordinance 2008-09 was passed as an emergency to enable Village Administrator Gary Gallogly to solicit bids for the repaving of several streets within the village. Gallogly said the repaving would be in excess of $25,000, so formal bids must be solicited.

Fredericktown Parks Director Bill Whaley told council he had received a complaint from a resident regarding the lack of a crosswalk across North Main Street in front of Community Park. Whaley said he believed there was a crosswalk there years ago, and said he told the citizen he would report the complaint to council. The resident said she found it difficult to cross from Salem Avenue to the park with a stroller.

Whaley also told council members that he needed to discuss contract matters with them in executive session following the regular council meeting. No action was taken following the executive session.

Mayor Roger Reed told council members he hoped they would attend the donkey basketball game scheduled for Friday night between the Mount Vernon and Fredericktown fire departments. The game is a benefit for Don Wilson, who has worked as a paramedic in Mount Vernon for over 25 years, and has been a part of the Fredericktown Fire Department for 18 years.
