MOUNT VERNON — Described as an extraordinary volunteer, this year’s Mount Vernon Exchange Club Golden Deeds Award winner is George Blocker. He is an Equine Assisted Therapy volunteer who is able to make each rider feel special.
One observer saw him get on his knees and walk next to a particularly tough 3-year-old rider, holding on to the pony with one hand and holding the child’s hand in the other so the youngster wouldn’t feel so small.
Blocker performs in a country band, Rebel Wind, and, according to the individual who nominated Blocker for the award, one time invited a young man with Down syndrome on the stage to jam with the band. He has volunteered with Hospice of Knox County for two years, Big Brothers/Big Sisters for three years, served as a volunteer pie baker for the Centerburg Oldtime Farming Festival and is vice president of the Centerburg Fourth of July Committee. His day job is as a United Parcel Service delivery man.
Blocker was introduced by the 2007 Golden Deeds winner, Dennis Rawson. His nomination form stated Blocker is outgoing, fun-loving, has wit and humor, and is an unsung hero in his community.
