MOUNT VERNON — Working hard to beat the heat, and glad the temperature has stayed below sweltering thus far, maintenance and custodial personnel in the Mount Vernon City school system are finishing the installation of room air conditioners at Pleasant Street Elementary.
The unusually high temperatures last August prompted several teachers to bring their own window units to the school, one of the district’s older buildings and not wired for central air-conditioning. Because the electrical infrastructure at that time was inadequate, the window air conditioners posed a safety hazard, and the teachers could not operate the units.
Now, said Superintendent Steve Short, all the classrooms have been rewired, and with the installation of nearly two dozen window units this week, the air conditioners are “ready to roll.”
The improved wiring also supports increased technology. Principal Karen Boylan said that technology includes computers, LCD projectors on the ceilings for grades one through five, and amplification systems for the classrooms. Several whiteboards are also now available, she said.
Although only relatively mild temperatures are predicted for the few days left in the school year, Short said Pleasant Street is now ready to accommodate the heat, just in time for summer school classes.
