Events scheduled for holiday


The following is a list of Memorial Day observances in the Knox County area:

Mount Vernon — Parade will begin Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the theme “Honor their Service,” followed by a ceremony on Public Square.

Mount Vernon — Traditional Decoration Day ceremonies, Monday, approximately noon, Mound View Cemetery veteran’s section. Presented by Gen. Banning Camp Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Fredericktown — Assembly on the square Monday at 9:30 a.m.; parade to Forest Cemetery at 10 a.m. The Memorial Day address will be given by the Rev. Keith Bohley of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church.

Bloomfield Cemetery — Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the cemetery, County Road 204, Centerburg. The Rev. Mosser of the Olive Green Church will be the speaker. Also participating in the ceremony will be the Highland ROTC, with Cmdr. Cope, the Highland Marching Band and local Boy Scouts.

Brandon — On Sunday, parade will form at the park south of Brandon at 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m. the parade will march to the cemetery, where services will follow. Everyone is welcome to participate in the parade.

Centerburg — On Monday, the parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. in the downtown area and proceed to Eastview Cemetery, where services will follow.

Danville — Parade will form Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the square and march to the Danville Memorial Park at 10 a.m. All entries are welcome; the Danville Marching Band will participate. Lloyd Miller, pastor of the Greer Wesleyan Church will be the speaker. Invocation will be delivered by Monty Vance of the New Harvest Community Gathering Church. There will be a fish fry from 4 to 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 650 in Danville.

Utica — On Monday, at 8 a.m. the Utica American Legion Post 92 will do a 21-gun salute at several area cemeteries, concluding with a memorial at 9:45 a.m. at Veterans Park, next to the Utica Fire Department. A service and program will be held at 11 a.m. at Utica American Legion Post 92 with a special speaker. A light lunch will follow at the Legion hall, which is open to the public.
