MOUNT VERNON -- A 74-year-old Mount Vernon man is in custody after allegedly murdering his wife in their Miller Road home Tuesday afternoon.

Group stages protest outside of offices
MOUNT VERNON -- Early this morning, a group calling itself the "Minutemen"waited outside the administrative offices of the Mount Vernon City Schools. The group was reportedly protesting the administration's directive that middle school science teacher John Freshwater remove his personal Bible from his desk.

KSWCD, farmer working to correct runoff problem
MOUNT VERNON -- Where Hopewell Road crosses Big Run Creek in Pleasant Township, a small amount of dark manure runoff can be seen flowing into the creek; an odor is present, too. The runoff degrades water quality, but the amount present at this particular location is not an amount that will cause fish to die, according to Rob Clendening of the Knox Soil and Water Conservation District.

City accepts donation
MOUNT VERNON -- Sgt. Benjamin Laymon of Mount Vernon liked and supported children, and a fund named after the fallen hero has donated $250 to the city to help needy children go to the city's water park.

County home sales, prices continue to decline
MOUNT VERNON -- Both home sales and sale prices for existing homes in Knox County during the first four months of 2008 were well below the figures posted for the same period in 2007, according to the Ohio Association of Realtors.

The Danville High School softball team has made it to the Division III Regional for the third season in a row. The only area team still in the postseason tournament, the Blue Devils plan on making some serious noise.

DANVILLE -- The Danville High School softball team has enjoyed several years of success, and this year is no different. The Blue Devils have again advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the their third season in a row, much of which is due to five senior players who have been together on the same team for the majority of their lives.

MOUNT VERNON -- The presence of a Mount Vernon hurdler at the state track meet just might be a reality this season. The Yellow Jackets have two hurldlers who are hoping to make it to that level.
