CENTERBURG — One hundred and two members of the class of 2008 said goodbye to Centerburg High School on Saturday.
“This is the day we’ve all waited for,” said co-valedictorian Lauren Wood. “As we go our separate ways, let’s not forget each other.”
Senior members of the choir got one last chance to perform during graduation ceremonies, singing the national anthem and the Centerburg Alma Mater.
After a welcome from class president Jenna Ross and student council representative Alisha Stevens, salutatorians Bethany Miles, Natalie Salisbury and Aunna Stambaugh thanked everyone and gave some words of wisdom to the graduating seniors.
Wood and the other valedictorians, Robert Ambrose, Jonathan Pozderac and Craig Sykes, brought up many memories the class has shared through its 12 years at Centerburg.
“We learned, taught, laughed and made friends,” said Pozderac. “We learned a lot of valuable lessons.”
“As I was preparing my speech, I thought about how much I’ve changed since I came to Centerburg in the sixth grade,” said Ambrose, who brought a good laugh to the crowd as he searched every pocket he could find for his speech notes. “I think that’s what school is about — change and, hopefully, growth. I had more great moments at Centerburg. I can’t think of a better place than Centerburg.”
“I want to congratulate all of you for making it this far,” said Sykes. “We’ve had a lot of funny memories. ... As you leave here, never forget who you are.”
After the seniors recognized their parents with a flower and a hug, each strode through the line to receive their diplomas from Leroy Bumpus and Lynn McCann of the Centerburg Board of Education.
The choir and band performed one last song each, and then the students turned their tassels as graduates of Centerburg High School.
