MOUNT VERNON — Judge Otho Eyster sentenced four men to prison and one to jail in Friday’s session of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas.
William T. Dilger, 24, Centerburg, pleaded guilty on May 23 to one count of aggravated assault, a fourth-degree felony. According to the indictment, on Nov. 2, 2007, Dilger and an accomplice, Nicholas A. Hudson, assaulted a 35-year-old Mount Vernon man, breaking the victim’s left arm in the attack. Eyster sentenced Dilger to 17 months in prison. However, since Dilger was on post release control at the time of the assault, his remaining PRC time of 494 days was added to his sentence. In total, Dilger was ordered to serve nearly three years in prison. He will receive credit for 44 days served.
Hudson also appeared in court on Friday and was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his role in the assault. Hudson pleaded guilty to the crime on May 2. He will receive credit for 102 days served.
Keith W. Carder, 19, Mount Vernon, appeared in court for the revocation of his community control sentence. On March 25, Carder pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in the fourth degree, and breaking and entering in the fifth degree. He was sentenced to three years of community control. Carder admitted in court that he violated the terms of his probation by smoking marijuana, drinking alcohol and violating his curfew. He was sentenced to serve 15 months in prison and was given credit for 111 days served.
Aaron J. Kosier, 20, Gambier, pleaded guilty on April 18 to one count of receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony. According to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher, on Nov. 11, 2007, Kosier was found to be in possession of a stolen laptop computer after Knox County sheriff’s deputies stopped him near Apple Valley for driving under suspension. The laptop, belonging to a local college, was found under the driver’s seat of Kosier’s vehicle. Eyster sentenced him to serve 11 months in prison, with credit for 18 days. Eyster added that he would not oppose an intensive prison program that may allow Kosier to be released early.
Jeremy A. Helmick, 29, Fredericktown, was sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of community control after pleading guilty to obstructing official business and possession of crack cocaine. According to Thatcher, on Feb. 28, sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve Helmick with felony arrest warrants out of Richland County at his residence on Upper Fredericktown Road. Thatcher said that when Helmick saw the deputies through a window, he allegedly retreated to another part of the house with one of his children. After a one-hour standoff, Helmick surrendered without incident after he saw the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit arrive at the scene. During a search of the house, deputies found two crack rocks.
In addition to the jail time, Helmick was ordered to enroll in the Licking-Muskingum Community Correction Center, an intensive supervision program. He will also serve a mandatory six-month driver’s license suspension. Eyster warned Helmick that any violation of his probation could land him up to 11 months in prison.
