Smoke forces evacuation

MOUNT VERNON -- Firefighters were forced to break down the door of an apartment in the three-story Terrace apartment building Monday evening around 6:30, when smoke from the apartment escaped into the basement and neighboring units.

EPA to analyze contents of barrel

FREDERICKTOWN -- More than a week after a 15-gallon barrel was found in the Kokosing River in Fredericktown, an Ohio EPA spokesman said arrangements have been made to have the barrel removed today from its current location at the Fredericktown Community Fire District.

Hartford Fair to celebrate 150 years

CROTON -- The Hartford Fair on Fairgrounds Road near Croton is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a long list of events at the grandstand and throughout the fair.

Marth updates commissioners on many items

MOUNT VERNON -- On Monday morning, the Knox County Board of Commissioners had a meeting with Emily Marth, safety, loss-control and HR coordinator. Marth had several updates to report, ranging from the fairgrounds fire preparedness to workers'compensation for the county.

Work continues on improving radio communication

MOUNT VERNON -- At a meeting Monday afternoon of the Knox County Fire Chiefs Association, improved radio communication was once again the main topic of discussion. Fire chiefs, Knox County Sheriff David Barber and Knox County EMA Director Marie Blubaugh were updated by George Catlett and Arlin Bradford of Vasu Communications Inc. about the new fleet sync boxes recently installed at the county and city 9-1-1 dispatch centers.

Mount Vernon captures title

MOUNT VERNON -- The Mount Vernon 12-and-under baseball team pulled out an easy victory on Monday to take the District 5 Little League title over Cambridge. Mount Vernon had little problem scoring in the game, and the combination of runs and very effective pitching led them to the district title, 12-4. Mount Vernon was in control nearly all of the contest.

MOUNT VERNON -- Chris Page has achieved a lot in his young harness racing driving career; $1 million in career earnings, 154 wins in last year's races at Scioto Downs. Still, the 24-year-old Mount Vernon resident has bigger aspirations for his racing future.
