MOUNT VERNON -- A barn isn't just a barn, at least not to Chuck Whitney. On the verge of his 90th birthday, the Knox Countian is still so excited by the layers of life to be found in barns that he joked he could talk all night about them. But that's no surprise for a fellow who can walk into a barn and tell you much of its history at a glance. Those details tell the story of the Ohio frontier.

Celebrity lineup set for charity harness race - VIDEO and PHOTOS

MOUNT VERNON -- Five local celebrities will take the harness reins on Sunday to raise money for their favorite charities as well as to help promote the sport of harness racing. To help prepare for the event, which will be held at the Knox County Fairgrounds, drivers were given the opportunity to practice earlier this week to get acquainted with the feel of the reins, the strength of the horse and the intensity of the competition.

Golf keeps players 'young at heart'

GAMBIER -- About 12 years ago, Marge and Bill Umstattd thought it would be fun to start a golf league for seniors such as themselves. It didn't take long for the Young At Heart league to become popular at the Tomahawk Hollow Golf Course near Gambier, and although membership has changed over the years, as many as 20 couples at a time have participated.

Knox board not named in lawsuit

MOUNT VERNON -- The Knox County Board of Elections is not one of the 50 counties named in a lawsuit filed by a voter activist group on July 10. The lawsuit asks a federal judge to proceed with criminal contempt proceedings against counties that destroyed ballots and other voting records from the 2004 election.

American Le Mans Series offers loads of racing enjoyment

In many fans'eyes, the upcoming American Le Mans Series race this weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course may be seen as simply a second fiddle to the Indy Racing League. Those fans would be in for quite the surprise if they followed the ALMS, and perhaps knew more about it. Not only is it one of the most unique racing series around, it is full of excellent drivers, including some very famous names from throughout racing.

Castroneves happy to be at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON -- The IndyCar Series makes a stop at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend for the Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio, and one driver couldn't be happier. Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves, now in his seventh full season in the IndyCar Series, returns to one of his most successful tracks with thoughts of a championship on his mind.

Players compete for same reason

MOUNT VERNON -- Talking with the participants of the 60-and-over men's softball league, it becomes clear that the players are there for a variety of reasons. One motivation, however, seems to ring through in all of their responses.
