MOUNT VERNON -- Eighty-four degrees and sunny were the conditions for Sunday's harness racing during the first day of the Knox County Fair. Little breeze and no rain led to fast times, tough competition and a nearly packed grandstand.
KNOX COUNTY -- The intense heat of a high-summer day didn't keep visitors from driving around the county to tour old barns on Saturday.
FREDERICKTOWN -- The Fredericktown Community Fire District Board approved a motion at its last meeting to schedule 80 hours of paid time each month for the fire department. Beginning Aug. 1, a firefighter will be scheduled at the station for a total of about 18 to 20 hours each week.
MOUNT VERNON -- Lauren Harvey, a member of the Producer's 4-H Club, is "pretty excited"to have won the title of rabbit Master Showman, Sunday, at the Knox County Fair. This is the first time she has achieved that goal.
MOUNT VERNON -- Only the most devoted family members would sit for an hour and a half in the hot sun to watch their 7-year-olds, clad in formal gowns and strappy shoes, compete in the 16th annual Little Miss Knox County pageant on Sunday afternoon at the fairgrounds.
MOUNT VERNON -- Part of exhibiting an animal at the fair is knowing how to show it off to the judges. Twelve-year-old Andy Rieman won the junior showmanship category in Sunday's guinea pig competition at the Knox County Fair, and went on to earn the Master Showman title. He is a member of the Country Outlaws 4-H Club.
MOUNT VERNON -- Only one thing will keep Thad Tuggle from winning the swine showmanship competition at the Knox County Fair in 2009 -- his age.
MOUNT VERNON -- Morgan Stull of Millwood stood with her Percheron, Saturn, to accept a trophy for winning Master Showman in the draft horse and pony competition Sunday afternoon. The 16-year-old East Knox student and her mother, Teresa, also accepted the Carroll Stull Memorial traveling plaque, which was awarded for the first time this year.
MOUNT VERNON -- The threat of a thunderstorm couldn't dampen spirits or keep Knox Countians away from the 159th annual Knox County Fair, which opened Sundaymorning.
MOUNT VERNON -- On Feb. 28, Toby May thought his dreams of performing music were over. That winter day, May's arm became caught and mangled in a salt-spreading auger at work. Alone, May thought his right arm would be completely lost, if not his life. He was eventually able to twist around and remove his cell phone from his opposite pocket to call for help.
MOUNT VERNON -- A National Tractor Pullers Association Region II competition jumpstarted evening entertainment at the Knox County Fair Sunday night, running six classes of various tractors and trucks in front of a full-capacity crowd at the grandstand.
