Freshwater suspended pending hearing

MOUNT VERNON -- The Mount Vernon Board of Education voted unanimously to suspend its teaching contract with eighth-grade science teacher John Freshwater on Monday, pending a hearing scheduled in late August.

Village discusses downtown

FREDERICKTOWN -- The revitalization of Fredericktown's historic downtown was discussed Monday evening at the Fredericktown Council meeting. Tricia Steyers, from the downtown shop Taste of Country, brought some new ideas for council to consider, as well as input from downtown business owners.

Danville hears about proposed business

DANVILLE -- Buildings, bridges and taxes were discussed by the Danville Village Council on Monday.

County gets update on CDBG

MOUNT VERNON -- On Monday morning, the Knox County Commissioners met with Amy Schocken of Community Development Consultants of Ohio to hear an update on the community development block grant for the county.

Wisecarver, Dady win demo derby

MOUNT VERNON -- Mud and car parts were flying Monday night at the Knox County Fairgrounds as the Demolition Derby drew a large crowd to enjoy the action. Cars took their best shots at each other until there was just one car standing at the end of the night. Ryan Wisecarver of Zanesville was the champion, outsmashing 12 other finalists who made it through three heats to the feature.

Alden cleans up at fair

MOUNT VERNON -- Although they must have been bursting with pride, Noel and Kate Alden of Danville kept their expressions reserved at the fair on Monday, when dairy showmanship became a virtual Alden family production.

Howell repeats with sheep

MOUNT VERNON -- Whoever coined the phrase "the silence of the lambs"did not have the sheep show ring at a county fair in mind. Nearly continuous baas and bleats echoed over the Knox County Fairgrounds on Monday as 4-H members prepared for and participated in the 2008 sheep showmanship contest.

Carpenter takes hog title

MOUNT VERNON -- Curtis Carpenter took the title of Grand Champion and Megan Iverson earned Reserve Champion honors at the Market Hog Show on Monday evening at the Knox County Fair.

Banburys sweep market goat show

MOUNT VERNON -- It was a Banbury sweep in the Market Goat Show at the Knox County Fair on Monday.
