Banburys sweep market goat show

MOUNT VERNON — It was a Banbury sweep in the Market Goat Show at the Knox County Fair on Monday.

Madison Banbury of Danville won the title of Grand Champion for the second year in a row, this time beating out her sister, Taylor, who was named Reserve Champion by judge Lisa Begley.

“It feels really good, exciting,” said Madison Banbury. “I was a little nervous ... and sad to see him go.”

“It feels good [getting Reserve Champion],” said Taylor Banbury. “But my sister’s more into goats, so I’m happy for her win.”

The sisters had the top two goats in the 85- to 98-pound class, then edged Mateo Lybarger’s 78-pound goat in the finals. Lybarger of Mount Vernon finished third, while his sister, Mariah, was fifth overall. Tori Anders of Danville finished fourth overall.

Begley was thorough in her judging of the animals in each category, using her hands to measure their length and width, and checking the muscle structure along the back, hips and legs.

“There was some fine quality whethers in this lineup,” said Begley. “These were some really nice animals with really nice feel to them.”

In the Born, Bred and Raised category, Emily Hughes had the top meat goat, while Richard Wilson came in second. Daniel Hohman was first in the dairy goat division of Born, Bred and Raised. There were 12 goats shown in the BBR classes.

“We encourage the kids to raise a goat and get into the markets themselves,” said Knox County Goat Improvement Association President Bill Belton. “I’m tickled that this many kids got involved.”

In the Production Meat Doe Show, the intermediate kid of Howard’s Daniel Roten was named Grand Champion. Katie Evans of Martinsburg had the Reserve Champion.
