HOWARD — The annual Apple Valley Flower Show, open to members of the Apple Valley Garden Club and the Apple Seeds Junior Garden Club, was held July 16 at Floral Valley Community Center, and was open to the public for viewing all afternoon.

The theme was in keeping with the current renewed interest in environmental matters: “Keeping a ‘Green House’ — Valley Style.”

Audrey Spearman, chairwoman of the show committee, said 167 entries were in the show, created and arranged by 25 adults and 11 junior members. The two divisions of the show were Horticulture Exhibits and Artistic Designs.

Best of Show awards were presented for each division, as well as to a junior member. Two members shared the Horticulture Best of Show award; Ann Bruere with her “Jersey Spider” hemcrocallis and Miriam King with her miniature landscape. Best of Show in Artistic Designs was presented to Amy Gordon, a novice entrant, for a “Green Design.” Junior Best of Show was awarded to Laura Kuhn with a “Roadside Materials” design.

Vicky Puster of Shreve served as judge; the judge’s award went to Miriam King for her “We ‘Dig’ Green” design incorporating a garden tool.

Educational exhibits included “Composting” by Sue Simon, “Reducing Water Pollution” by Rose Ragan, “Reducing Air Pollution” by Audrey Spearman.

Invitational exhibits were “Living Greener” by Linda Montgomery, Knox County’s Recycling Coordinator, and “Organic Products” by Windy Hill Nursery.

Spearman said a special class included Miniature Landscapes in a container garden, with “A Fairy Garden” class component for juniors.

Another special class was “Take the ‘Plunge’ to Green,” a design incorporating a toilet bowl plunger.

In addition to Spearman, other organizing committee members were Sue Simon, Judy Skrovan, D.J. Young, Debbie Hurlbert, Mary Brock, Barb Bentz, Rose Ragan, Miriam King and Jana Stewart.
