MOUNT VERNON -- They might not be running gassers or bringing the ball carrier to the ground in full pads and helmets, but the Mount Vernon High School marching band is working just as hard as other athletes to prepare for the 2008 football season.

Highland residents to vote on school levy

SPARTA -- A special election will be held Aug. 5 for residents in the Highland Local school district. The board of education is once again asking the community to support a 4.4-mill levy to build a new high school, renovate the existing high school into a middle school, and renovate the middle school/Central Elementary complex to house all of the district's elementary students.

County home sales, prices continue to decline

MOUNT VERNON -- Real estate sales for Knox County fell by 17 percent during the first half of 2008, compared to the same time a year ago, according to the latest report from the Ohio Association of Realtors. Prices for sold units slid by 10 percent in the time frame.

Vining sisters triumph in NYC

MOUNT VERNON -- Well, they've made it there. If the old song about New York, New York holds true, the sky is the limit for sisters Liz and Gracie Vining, who placed impressively on Saturday at the InternationalModeling and Talent Association conference in New York City.

Young MV team not intimidated

A lot of very good baseball teams have come from Mount Vernon, but the 2008 12-year-old Little League All-Star team is arguably one of the best the city has ever fielded. After winning the state tournament, the squad is now fewer than a half-dozen wins away from competing in the Little League World Series.

Pitching rotation strong for MV

Steadfast pitching has been the one constant for the Mount Vernon 15-year-old Babe Ruth team. Up to this point, the squad has performed at a high level, game in and game out. And, if the state final was any indication, Mount Vernon is in great shape heading into its first Ohio Valley Regional.
