Cardington woman dies in accident

Monday, August 25, 2008

MOUNT GILEAD — A Cardington woman died from injuries Wednesday night after she was thrown from a motorcycle in an accident on Ohio 95.

Andrea D. Gladman, 26, died at Grant Medical Center, where she was flown by MedFlight helicopter from the crash scene on Ohio 95, two miles west of Ohio 13. The driver of the motorcycle, Kevin L. Schirtzinger, 47, Marengo, was discharged this morning from Grant Medical Center.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said they were riding west of Ohio 95 at 10:14 p.m., when the motorcycle hit a Black Angus heifer that was crossing the road. The motorcycle overturned and the couple was thrown to the road. Members of the Fredericktown fire and police departments searched for and found the calf along the road after the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.

MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon youth found out the hard way Wednesday evening what happens when driving too fast on a narrow township road. Elizabeth Simon, 16, wrecked her Dodge SUV on Lower Gambier Road, after it went out of control.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said she was westbound at a high rate of speed when the vehicle veered off the left side of the road. Simon overcorrected, and the SUV swerved to the right side of the road, then back to the left, at which point the vehicle started to roll over.

Approaching from the west was Daniel Tiffany, 56, Centerburg, who said he saw the SUV was out of control and stopped his Volkswagen Jetta. While rolling, the SUV struck the front end of Tiffany’s car, causing heavy damage. Simon was taken by the College Township Squad to Knox Community Hospital for treatment. Tiffany had a cut on his left hand that was treated by a medic. Simon was charged with failure to control.
