Winners of the Most Beautiful Garden Contest announced

For those of us from the Mount Vernon News who serve as judges for the Most Beautiful Garden Contest, the week we spend our afternoons judging gardens is the best week of the year. In fact, just watching for the entries to come in and seeing what is in store for us is as exciting as discovering new presents under the Christmas tree as a child. Having the opportunity to go into the sunshine and explore invigorating blooms and creative endeavors is more of a fun adventure than a job.

Johnstown firefighter killed in accident

A Johnstown-Monroe volunteer firefighter was killed in an industrial accident Thursday at 4:15 p.m. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Philip Durbin, 44, of Johnstown, had raised the bed on his dump truck to unload gravel when the bed came in contact with a power line.

Rutherford retires from sheriff’s office

A 28-year career in law enforcement came to a close Thursday afternoon with the retirement of Knox County Deputy Sheriff Lt. Mark Rutherford. He grew up in Mount Vernon and graduated from high school in 1978. A three-year stint in the Army serving as a military police trooper, with 18 months in Germany, pointed him to a civilian career in law enforcement.
