Freshwater hearing postponed

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Schools Superintendent Steve Short confirmed this morning that the termination hearing of middle school science teacher John Freshwater has been rescheduled.

Originally slated for Aug. 26, the new date is Oct. 1, with the time and location still to be determined. Short said the change was made due to a docket conflict with hearing referee R.B. Shepherd, Esquire.

The Mount Vernon School Board voted to terminate Freshwater’s teaching contract due to a number of allegations of professional misconduct, which include allowing a student to be injuried with an electrostatic device, proselytizing in the classroom, failing to adhere to the established science curriculum and overstepping his role as advisor to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
