MOUNT VERNON — Cindy Weiss is the new director of student services for the Mount Vernon City Schools.
Originally from Canton, Weiss spent 27 years in the Chicago area. Her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in applied and educational psychology, respectively, are from Loyola University. Weiss worked as a school psychologist for 11 years and earned a special education administrator’s license. She then worked in Downers Grove, Ill., as a special education coordinator before moving to Ashtabula. Weiss also taught educational psychology at Kent State-Ashtabula and at Youngstown State University.
“I love the Mount Vernon area,” Weiss said. “It’s beautiful. I love the people and I really see myself staying here. ... I like living in a small town. There were 58,000 people in the Chicago suburb I lived in, and they were packed into three square miles.”
Weiss said her background in statistics and research will be useful in her new job, as will her training in terms of diagnoses and knowledge of various disabilities.
“I think I have a really good knowledge of medications, side effects, family systems, the mental health side of things and the biological side of things,”she said.
Weiss said she is a firm believer that every discipline has to work together for the benefit of students.
“You need to be able to look at the whole child,” she said. “That’s really important.”
Weiss resides in Apple Valley with her mother, Margaret Taylor, and her adult son, Scott.
