MVNU turning butter cow into biodiesel

The butter that once made up the famous sculptures at the Ohio State Fair is now sitting in black barrels on the campus of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, waiting to be turned into biodiesel. All 2,500 pounds of butter used in the state fair sculptures, and also about 300 gallons of waste vegetable oil from the fair, were acquired by MVNU and will be processed into biodiesel over the next few months.

Statistics don’t tell the story for this year’s crop weather. On paper, Knox County has seen rain totaling up to a figure approaching normal levels for the preceding 12 months. But the reality is that it has been a roller-coaster ride, starting with a drenched spring, which delayed planting and stunted growth, followed by a bone-dry summer, which has only intermittently relieved plants with rain.

New Yorker rallies in support of teacher

Not realizing that the termination hearing for Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater was rescheduled from the original date of Tuesday to Oct. 1, the Rev. Ted Snyder and his family drove from their home in Rochester, N.Y., to Mount Vernon’s Public Square to rally in support of the suspended teacher.

Area schools celebrate report cards

Public schools in the area are celebrating their achievements as reported on the 2007-08 school district report cards. All of the districts received an “effective” designation, with the exception of Johnstown-Monroe, which earned an excellent rating.

KCH to open new center

The new Center for Wound Healing at Knox Community Hospital will officially open Sept. 8, but doctors and hospital staff held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday evening to celebrate the new facility that has been planned for nearly a year.
