Danville coach placed on administrative leave

Only one week into the high school football season and the Danville Blue Devils are already undergoing a couple of major changes. First, quarterback Marcus Magers broke his arm in the season opener. Now, Danville physical education teacher and head football coach Jack O’Rourke has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Mount Vernon schools designated effective

Along with all the districts in the area, the Mount Vernon City Schools are celebrating the 2007-08 school year report card. The district as a whole met 25 of 30 state indicators, reached a performance index score of 96 out of a possible 120, and was designated effective.

Obama speech cheers faithful, courts independents

Democrats and independents alike turned out Thursday night at The Alcove Restaurant to celebrate Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colo. One of three such parties being held in the area last night, The Alcove event was organized by the Democratic Women and found a large crowd of about 60 people breaking into laughter, applause and cheers during the televised address.
