Generator fire scorches home

By , News Photographer
September 17, 2008

BUTLER — John Daniels said he heard the generator stop running, and went outside to check it at his home near Daniels’ Corner, northwest of Amity. He found flames shooting up from the truck in which the generator was placed, scorching the side of his house above the garage.

He got in the truck and drove it away from the house; the house has only minor damge to the siding and a broken window. Without power from Ohio Edison since the storm Sunday afternoon, Daniels had borrowed the big industrical genrator from his son, and placed it in the back of the truck.

The generator, a four-cylinder, diesel-powered unit, was powering a freezer and water pump. The fire alarm was turned in by Fred Mankins, who saw the fire while driving on Fredericktown Amity Road. Mankins said flames were at least 10 feet in the air when he first saw the fire.
