Neighbors reach out to those in need

September 19, 2008

CENTERBURG — As the area continues to struggle without electricity, concerned residents in the Centerburg community decided something needed to be done to help out their fellow neighbors.

According to Judy Whited, they began to talk to each other, reached out to the Central Ohio Joint Fire District and the American Red Cross, and whipped up a hot meal and opened the doors to the Centerburg Elementary School.

“We served over 200 people last night,” Whited said this morning. “That was all spur-of-the-moment and by word of mouth.”

Whited said it was easy to get the community to donate funds to help pay for the food.

Last night’s venture was so successful, the group will open the doors to the elementary school cafeteria again today, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., for those in need of a hot meal and personal interaction.

Whited said the group is very concerned about senior citizens and shut-ins. Meals for these invididuals can be delivered if needed. Anyone knowing someone who could benefit from a meal should call the elementary school at 625-6488.

In addition to dinner, those still without power can bring water jugs to fill, and can take showers at the junior high building from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We took a survey in school yesterday and found out that over 200 of our students were still without power; and 18 staff members, too,” Whited said.
