MOUNT VERNON — Students, kindergarten through the eighth grade, 139 in all, from St. Vincent de Paul School marched from their school Wednesday morning with food for Interchurch Social Services. The food will go to the Interchurch to feed the poor in Mount Vernon.
Parish Priest Mark Hammond said the annual event celebrates the Patron Saint, St. Vincent.
“We are teaching service to the poor and helping others,” the Rev. Hammond said. After mass the students walked from the school on East High Street the four blocks to the Interchurch home on East Gambier Street.
In orderly fashion, they carried their food contributions to the rear porch and placed them in boxes. Interchurch pantry manager Sandy Daubenspeck told he students, “The pantry provides food for 350 families every month, that’s feeding a lot of families.” Interchurch Executive Director Joy Harris told the students, “We are happy to see you thinking of others.”
