Combine catches fire

September 26, 2008

MOUNT VERNON — Tim Smith was combining soybeans in a field off North Liberty Road on Thursday afternoon when, “I smelled smoke and had to get out of the field and not set it on fire.” He succeeded and stopped the combine on the lawn of the home at 14809 N. Liberty Road. By then the combine was burning strongly.

Dean Robinson, a trucker hauling soybeans for Smith, had just returned from taking a load to Marion. “I grabbed my fire extinguisher but the fire was too far along.” Smith also had an extinguisher and they said they emptied both of them to no avail. Then Robinson said they called 9-1-1. The College Township, Monroe Station, responded to the fire.
