MOUNT VERNON — Taverns and coffeehouses have long been venues for public discussion of issues and events of the time. In August 1774, in Williamsburg, Va., for example, a meeting was held at the Raleigh Tavern to choose delegates for the Virginia Convention.
Locations where these public discussions were held were often referred to as a Penny University. The term originated in the 18th century, when patrons of coffeehouses in England paid a penny to enter the coffeehouse. Once inside, the patron not only had access to coffee, he could participate in discussions, read newspapers or pamphlets, and learn the latest news and gossip of the community.
The Penny University provided a venue for a variety of people, from all walks of life and professions, to mix together, creating an environment for discussion of ideas and debate on the issues of the day.
The residents of Knox County now have a chance to engage in a modern-day version of the Penny University.
On Monday, area residents are invited to participate in “Up for Discussion,” a forum for citizens to voice their opinion on a variety of topics. Sponsored by the Mount Vernon News, topics can range from politics to religion to what the future holds for Knox County. Citizens can select the topics they wish to discuss; depending on the topics selected, a time limit of 15 to 20 minutes may be placed on each topic.
Although “Up for Discussion” is a chance for citizens to voice their comments on election issues and/or candidates, it is not a forum for candidates for political office to campaign. Participants will be asked to keep their comments civil and courteous, and focused on the issues.
“Up for Discussion” will be held at Sips Coffee House on Monday, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. It will also take place on Monday, Oct. 20, and Monday, Nov. 3. Sips is located 101 S. Main St., Mount Vernon.
