Parents’ role important in school

Parents have a major impact on their children’s success in school, and the parental attitude toward learning and its importance has a lasting effect on the students. It could be said that parents of students with special needs have an even more vital role to play in their child’s education, and may have to be even more active in supporting their child.

MVHS deals with staph infection on football team

Last week, a suspected case of staphylococcus infection was reported at Mount Vernon High School. Since it involved a football player, school officials had team members clear their lockers and take everything home to be washed.

Cell phone confiscated from student

Mount Vernon school superintendent Steve Short confirmed Monday that a cell phone was confiscated from a middle school student last week.

Candles can be dangerous in homes

Candles are popular for their fragrance, and the mood they set in a room. They also can be extremely dangerous, having caused approximately 15,600 home structure fires in 2005.
