Bladensburg man injured when dumptruck rolls

October 9, 2008

GAMBIER — Small’s Sand and Gravel driver Denny Harstine of Bladensburg was injured Wednesday afternoon when the dumptruck he was driving on Ohio 229 left the road and rolled over.

According to Trooper Garic Warner of the Ohio State Patrol, Harstine lost control after overcorrecting a swerve to the right. The truck then veered off the left side of the roadway and rolled down an enbankment.

College Township Fire Chief Bill Smith called Harstine, 56, “real lucky,” considering the extensive damage to the driver’s side of the truck cab.

Harstine was transported to Knox Community Hospital by the College Township squad. He was treated and released.

Several Small’s employees arrived at the scene shortly after firefighters, to check on Harstine’s well-being. The dumptruck was carrying a load of limestone, and left the road near a curve during wet, slippery conditions.

According to Warner, Harstine was cited with failure to control.

Ohio 229 was closed briefly while emergency crews dealt with the accident.
