Church steeple getting facelift
MOUNT VERNON — Nearly 100 years ago, in 1916, workers dismantled the elegant steeple atop the bell tower at the First Congregational Church, 200 N. Main St. It had been struck by lightning more than once and caught on fire, had been weakened by wind and was no longer stable, and the congregation thought it best to have it removed.
