Danville to check into getting new post office

October 21, 2008

DANVILLE — The village of Danville will be looking at the possibility of a new post office in the near future.

Village resident Rich Loney brought the matter before Village Council at its meeting Monday night. Loney bought a building that he felt would make a good spot for a new post office, and talked with the U.S. Representative’s office about that possibility. He was told the village needed to discuss the possible change, then get back with the federal government to determine whether one was needed and where a possible new post office would be located.

Council members responded positively to the idea of a new post office, with some saying they felt the village had outgrown its current location on Main Street. The lack of parking and vehicle access to the post office was also a concern of council members.

Mayor Bob Dile said he would talk with U.S. Rep. Zack Space’s office and find out how to begin the process and what kind of costs and other concerns might be included in building a new post office.

Council also discussed a stop sign and village fees for tapping into water and sewer lines during the meeting.

After reviewing the area, council determined it was best to place two stop signs on North Street at the intersection of East Street. The stop signs would make it a four-way stop, which council felt would be safer considering buggy traffic from the Mohican Valley Trail enters East Street at that point.

Council passed an ordinance that allows the village administrator to set the fees for tapping into water and sewer lines in or out of the village. The village recently put in new lines on North Market Street and the ordinance will allow the fees to be set depending on the material and labor needed to complete the tap.

In other news, council:

•Heard an insurance proposal from Gary Walters of Rinehart Insurance in Mansfield. The agency is offering insurance for village employees.

•Voted to pay $5,900 for the loan used to pay for paving of Trail Drive. The village received a grant for the $20,000 project, but has received just 75 percent of that and needs to repay the remainder of the loan it had taken to perform the project.

•Heard from solid waste chairman Gary Moreland on three properties that were in violation of village laws. Two property owners, 103 Cedar St. and 202 Market St., have complied and cleaned up the properties. The property owner at 107 Ross has not complied as of the meeting Monday. It was also determined that someone was building on to a trailer in the trailer court and that a letter would be sent asking them to stop construction.

•Heard from village administrator Robert Shipley that the leaf pickup had begun in the village. Shipley asked that residents rake the leaves to the curb and that limbs and trash be removed from the piles so village equipment can sweep up the leaves.

Council adjourned into executive session to discuss possible litigation at 9:58 p.m. No further action was expected.
