Freshwater hearing update

October 28, 2008

MOUNT VERNON — Jenifer Dennis, the mother of Zach Dennis, the student who testified earlier this morning, took the stand in Mount Vernon science teacher John Freshwater’s termination hearing today at the Knox County Service Center.

According to Mount Vernon News reporter Pam Schehl, Dennis spoke about the injury caused to her son by the Tesla Coil used by Freshwater in class. Freshwater’s attorney Kelly Hamilton declined to cross-examine Dennis.

Freshwater was then called to the stand and questioned by school board attorney David Millstone. They reviewed a YouTube video of Freshwater speaking at the August school board meeting and his interview on Fox News with Larry Elder to confirm public statements made by Freshwater.

Freshwater also answered questions about the Tesla Coil, including how it was used in his classroom and how it should not be used, and about his role as monitor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The hearing was to resume at 2:15 p.m., following a recess for lunch.
