MOUNT VERNON — Sychar Road resident Andrea Gantz said she was resting on the couch Sunday afternoon while recuperating from surgery when a crash outside sent her and some of the contents of her home onto the floor.
“It knocked me off the couch,” Gantz said, describing the force with which a Ford Explorer, driven by Paul Carroll, 61, of Mansfield, struck the side of her house.
The Explorer missed the curve going south on Sychar Road during wet weather, and first struck a parked Mercury Topaz owned by Jen King. It then damaged the Cadillac Deville in the Gantz driveway, before plowing into the house.
Five people were in the house at the time; only Gantz requested treatment from Mount Vernon paramedics. The Mount Vernon Fire Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded. Carroll was charged by OSHP with failure to control.
Nine-year-old Braden King, who lives next door to the Gantz home, said he saw the SUV as it left the road and hit the house.
“It kind of startled all of us,” King said.
