CENTERBURG — According to the Columbus office of the FBI, the robbery of the Centerburg First-Knox National Bank has not been solved.
“There is nothing new to report on the Knox or Licking county cases,” said FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas.
There have been news reports of two men believed responsible for a series of three bank robberies committed in Logan and Hardin counties.
“At this time we do not think there is a connection to the Knox and Licking county robberies,” Trombitas added. “These involve different M.O.s and physical descriptions.”
According to the latest FBI statistics, in a report on bank crime statistics between April 1 and June 30, there have been a total of 1,406 robberies of financial institutions nationwide. Most of these (1,224) have been at commercial banks with the rest divided between mutual savings banks, savings and loan associations and credit unions totaling $12,550,693.29 in cash alone.
Investigation to date has resulted in the identification of 566 (32 percent) of the 1,749 persons known to be involved. Of these 566 identified persons, 246 (43 percent) were determined to be users of narcotics, and 101 (18 percent) were found to have been previously convicted in either federal or state court for bank robbery, bank burglary, or bank larceny according to the report.
