MOUNT VERNON — On Monday, Judge Otho Eyster, in the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, sentenced seven men for various felony crimes and violations of community control supervision, according to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher.
Shawn G. Aber, 41, Howard, was convicted of illegal cultivation of marijuana. Aber’s 11-month prison sentence will remain suspended while he serves a three-year term of community control supervision. The terms of Aber’s supervision include a 30-day jail sentence that starts immediately, a $2,500 fine and a six-month driver’s license suspension.
Thatcher said that on July 18 at about noon at Aber’s residence, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office seized approximately 160 growing marijuana plants and other items commonly used to grow marijuana. Detective Sgt. Gary Rohler, Detective Roger Brown and Detective David Light investigated the case.
Robert T. Hayner Jr., 30, Fredericktown, was also convicted of illegal cultivation of marijuana. Hayner’s three-year prison sentence will remain suspended while he serves a three-year term of community control supervision. The terms of Hayner’s supervision include a 30-day jail sentence that starts immediately, a $5,000 fine and a six-month driver’s license suspension.
Thatcher said that on Aug. 8 at about 9 a.m., at Hayner’s residence, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office seized approximately 46 growing marijuana plants, seven freezer bags containing harvested marijuana and other items commonly used to grow marijuana. Rohler, Brown and Light also investigated this case.
Scott L. Reynolds, 30, Howard, was convicted of possessing a stolen 50 caliber muzzleloader on Oct. 1, 2007. Thatcher said the firearms were stolen in a burglary three weeks earlier. Reynolds’ 15-month prison sentence will remain suspended while he serves a three-year term of community control supervision. Deputy Max Huffman, KCSO, investigated the case.
Brian M. Wilson, 31, Mount Vernon, was convicted of possessing a stolen check on Nov. 5. Wilson was sentenced to 11 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $275. Thatcher said that on Nov. 6, Patrolman David McElroy, Mount Vernon Police Department, responded to a local bank, where Wilson had just attempted to cash a check reported stolen, in Columbus. McElroy recovered the stolen check, and in the course of his investigation learned that Wilson had cashed another stolen check in the amount of $275 on Nov. 5.
Michael L. Krier, 31, Canton, was convicted of theft by deception. Krier was sentenced to 11 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $30. Thatcher said that on the evening of Nov. 5, Krier purchased 15 items at an auction totaling $877, then left the auction without paying for the items. Patrolman Beau Ayers, Fredericktown Police Department, requested that the Canton Police Department try to make contact with Krier about the stolen property. Canton PD found Krier in possession of all the stolen property with the exception of one $30 item.
Michael S. Hunt, 38, Columbus, was convicted of failing to pay child support on May 18, 2007. Hunt’s 11-month prison sentence was suspended on the conditions that he stayed current on his $92.50 per month child support payments and that he made payments on his $15,000 child support arrearage during a five-year term of community control supervision. Thatcher said Hunt’s prison sentence was imposed Monday based of his admissions that he has made only one monthly payment since he was convicted and that he failed to report to his supervising officer as directed.
Jamie Lee Gibson, 40, Mount Vernon, was convicted of failing to provide change of address notification to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 23, 2007. Thatcher said Gibson is required to register his address due to a conviction for a sex offense in Knox County in 2004. Gibson’s 17-month prison sentence was imposed Monday based on his admissions that he possessed marijuana on Oct. 23, and that he tested positive for marijuana use on Oct. 27.
