FREDERICKTOWN — Children and families in Fredericktown stopped by the Fredericktown Community Fire District on Saturday to help the firefighters and Santa Claus brighten the holiday for children in need this Christmas.
The FCFD toy drive is now in full swing, with fire boots popping up at Fredericktown businesses filling up with change, and firefighters collecting new toys which will be distributed by Fredericktown Interchurch Social Services before Christmas.
“It’s our way of supporting the community that supports us,” said Firefighter Shane Smith, who helps organize the toy drive each Christmas.
Last year firefighters collected and purchased toys for over 100 children.
“Our department anticipates an increased need in the community this Christmas due to the current economy,” said Fire Chief Scott Mast. “Our goal is to try and provide as many kids as possible with a happy Christmas morning.”
During the upcoming Fredericktown Christmas Walk, Sunday, between noon and 5, firefighters will be cooking chili over an open fire on the Fredericktown public square. A meal including chili, cornbread and a brownie will be sold. All proceeds will go toward the toy drive.
A silent auction featuring many Longaberger items, and baked goods will also be available to raise money for the toy drive.
People can drop off toys or monetary donations at the firehouse, or call 694-9701 to have the donations picked up.
Smith said dropping off a toy is an easy way to help those who need a helping hand this Christmas.
“Every kid should have Christmas,” he said.
