Cause of Howard Street fire undetermined

The Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a house fire Thursday morning around 11:15. The home is owned by George Ellis, who was not at home at the time of the fire.

Hundreds to receive Christmas toys

During their fourth annual Christmas for Kids toy drive, Mount Vernon firefighters collected and purchased thousands of toys for children in need to enjoy Christmas morning.

Auto industry troubles will have local effect

The end-of-year holiday season can be a mixed bag for many workers in the auto industry. Most of the major auto manufacturers shut down production during that time, which has a trickle-down effect on companies supplying parts to the auto industry. If production of automobiles is shut down or even curtailed, there is no need for parts.

Roof catches fire at St. Vincent church

 During their fourth annual Christmas for Kids toy drive, Mount Vernon firefighters collected and purchased thousands of toys for children in need to enjoy Christmas morning. When the Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on High Street late Wednesday afternoon, it brought a lot of equipment and manpower, knowing a fire in the large older building could quickly grow.
