MOUNT VERNON — One act of generosity sometimes leads to another, as Alternative Center students recently discovered. Afterschool program participants created works of art to be displayed at Chez Lauré, and, in return, got free haircuts.
It all started when Lori Shipley, the salon’s owner, wanted some student art work to display in her shop. Several Alternative Center students rose to the challenge and created paintings and drawings for the salon.
“I think the art work is pretty good,” said Shipley. “It’s creative and a way for them to express themselves.”
After the artwork was in place, Shipley decided to expand the partnership to further benefit the students. She and her staff provided free haircuts to selected students, and also provided them with instruction on proper hair care and other beauty tips.
Freshman Danielle Johnson was pleased to see her artwork on display and looking forward to a new hair style, as was Marie Daley, another freshman. She said she was surprised and happy to get a professional cut.
Stylist Sara Boucher is one of the Chez Lauré staff members who donated her time to give haircuts. She gave junior Amanda Schultz a haircut, and Amanda donated her former tresses to Locks of Love.
Shipley said she is planning to rotate the artwork as the Alternative Center students complete further projects, giving other students the chance to show off their work — and maybe get a new “do” in return.
