City tax forms available online

January 14, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — Taxpayers required to file city of Mount Vernon income tax have a new tool to make the process easier.

According to Debbie Tyson, tax administrator, the 2008 individual and business tax return forms will be online at the city’s Web site, mountvernonohio.org.

“To be environmentally friendly, we needed to get the forms online,” said Tyson. “People have been asking for that for several years, so we’re doing it this year.

“The city has always had a combined business and personal tax form,” she continued. “With putting them online this year, we felt it was the perfect time to separate the forms.”

Tyson said residents will be able to access a personalized version of the forms. The form will include an individual’s or business’ city of Mount Vernon account number, name and address. Users can complete the form and print it, then send the completed form, along with required attachments, to the tax office.

Those who are unable to complete the entire form in one sitting can save it to their desktop. When they go in to complete the form on their desktop, they will have to re-enter their name and account number.

Tyson said the ultimate goal is to provide all the personalized information an individual or business needs to complete a city income tax return. An example of information the department hopes to provide includes estimated tax payments an individual or business has made throughout the year.

The Income Tax Department will mail each taxpayer a letter containing the information needed to access the personalized site. Tyson said the letter should go out in about a week.

Filing of individual tax return is mandatory for all city residents 18 years of age and older, unless an individual has been exempted. Returns are due by April 15.
