Plenty of topics ‘Up for Discussion’

February 11, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — Potholes and pools, roads and raises, the economy and elections. These are just some of the topics which have been on the table at previous Up for Discussion forums.

The next forum will be Monday at Sips,101 S. Main St., from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Members of the community are encouraged to bring to the discussion their questions and comments about topics of interest to them, whether it be on a local, state or national level. Discussion at January’s forum ranged from concessions at the city pool to how-to tips on surviving another Depression.

The discussions are informal and have no set structure — almost anything and everything can be up for discussion. Current and former elected officials have weighed in on topics, often giving, as Paul Harvey would say, the “rest of the story.” Or, if not the rest of the story, at least another side to the issue.

“My forte certainly isn’t public speaking,” said Liz Lutwick, News assistant publisher. “Up for Discussion is different. It’s an informal meeting and we don’t worry about making speeches. We just have conversation about many subjects.

“Another thing I find really awesome is that we have had Mount Vernon council members John Fair and Mike Hillier attend,” she continued. “Another familiar face is Thom Collier. These people are really listening to our concerns. We do have a voice and now is the time to be heard. Come join us this Monday evening at Sips.”
