High winds topple livestock barn

February 13, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — A landmark barn on Morgan Center Road, south of Mount Vernon, was a casualty of Wednesday night’s high wind.

The 150-by-30-foot structure collapsed under the more than 50 mph wind.

“We heard it go down but didn’t know if it was the house or the barn going,” owner Richard Parkinson said. “I don’t know exactly what time it was — our electricity was out — but it was after 11 p.m.

“It’s an old, old barn, but I don’t know how old it is,” he added.

The barn housed livestock on the ground floor and had an area for hay storage above.

“We were lucky it was empty, and has been for about two years,” Parkinson said.

He has owned and farmed the property for 37 years.
