COLUMBUS — Finalists were announced Wednesday in the Associated Press Society of Ohio’s 2008 newspaper competition.
The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places and honorable mentions — will be announced at the annual APSO annual convention May 3 in Columbus.
For the sixth year in a row, the Mount Vernon News has finalists in the contest. Finalists include Kenesha Beheler and George Breithaupt, Best online photojournalist; Pam Schehl, Best Breaking News for her articles on the Freshwater controversy; and Mark Jordan, Best Explanatory Reporting, for his article “Face to face with a chicken farm.”
Sixty-six daily newspapers submitted 2,908 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2008.
Entries were judged by editors from The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Division V; The Modesto (Calif.) Bee, Division IV; the Rome (Ga.) News-Tribune, Division III; The Daily Advance, Elizabeth City, N.C., and the Statesboro (Ga.) Herald, Division II; and The Daily Times, Maryville, Tenn., Division I. The News competes in Division II.
