Inmate found dead at jail

March 4, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — A 41-year-old inmate died in the Knox County Jail on Monday afternoon.

According to Sheriff David Barber, deputies found Nicholas B. Parent of 49 Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, hanging in his cell at approximately 3 p.m. Monday. Barber said Parent was alone in the cell and was hanging by a sheet tied to a ceiling vent grate.

Upon finding the inmate, jail staff members performed CPR until Mount Vernon Fire Department medics arrived and took over resuscitation efforts. Parent was pronounced dead at the jail by Knox County Coroner Dr. Jennifer Ogle, who ordered the body sent to the Licking County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

Barber said the investigation is being continued by detectives and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

Parent was in the jail on charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.
