MOUNT VERNON — There is not an outbreak of lice among Mount Vernon school students, according to Superintendent Steve Short. Short said the rumor going around Mount Vernon about lice in the schools started with two e-mails to a Columbus television station.
Although lice found among students is not out of the ordinary, Short said the spring of the year produces more cases among children. He added that young students who interact physically — more often those younger than fifth grade — tend to transmit the lice more often.
When teachers or the school nurse observes the condition, the parents are notified, Short said, adding that lice are controlled with either prescription medication or over-the-counter medication.
