Vandals damage fence

March 27, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — Vandals struck once again at the playground in Riverside Park. On Thursday night or early this morning, someone tore down several of the 8-foot sections of white vinyl fence surrounding the playground.

Geoff Oliver, superintendent with the Mount Vernon Parks Department, discovered the damage when he drove by the park on his way to work this morning.

“It’s a mess,” Oliver said. “It’s an ongoing problem, but this week it has to do with spring break, apparently. I assume it’s kids. We’ve had a couple grass fires and now the fence. It’s a constant fight to keep that fence up.”

Oliver said some sections of the fence were already missing and scheduled for repair, but the new damage, particularly on the west side of the playground, makes the multitude of missing fencing more apparent.

The damaged fencing will be repaired or replaced at the city’s expense.

“We repair the fence as long as we can,” Oliver said, “and if there’s nothing left to repair, we just have to buy more.”
