Company to offer wireless Internet throughout county

March 30, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — One of the greatest advancements in technology has been the Internet; more significant, wireless Internet. In eight weeks, Safe-t.net will be officially up and running with a new wireless service to allow consumers in remote areas to receive high-speed Internet service.

“We have been doing this for some time, we are just adding more opportunities for people, especially in outlining communities, to be able to get higher speed Internet service,” said Patrick J. Quin, president.

The new service would be in a wireless format able to reach some remote areas of the county.

“[Customers] will have to have an antenna unit that will be located at [their] home, and we will have antenna towers in various places to broadcast the signal and send out the connection through a wireless fashion that will be received by the client,” he said.

Safe-t.net’s goal is to reach consumers in rural areas and those who do not get regular Internet services.

“There are a lot of people that don’t have high-speed Internet and are not able to get it now. ... There are some roads and streets in the county and beyond that only have two houses, and for some companies, it’s cost prohibitive to put high-speed Internet down that road,” he said. “So we then broadcast all the way out there and the cost for infrastructure and the cost to actually make that happen, as far as a wireless scenario goes, is far less.”

With any Internet or wireless service, there is always an area where the service cannot be reached or has trouble connecting to. However, Quin does not see that as a serious problem with his service.

“[Gaps are] a lot less likely with the wireless we are using,” he said. “[Though] we are not going to be able to blanket the county right away, we will be pretty close.”

Safe-t.net has been in the community for several years, and also offers DSL connection, dial-up, Web hosting, technical services and e-mail services. One service offered is a filtering service, which will block objectionable material and monitor Internet use.

“The biggest thing that we do that differentiates us primarily from all the other ISPs in the world is that we do filter the Internet ... from all the trash that is on the Internet before it reaches your business or home,” said Quin.

Safe-t.net is looking into other services to offer.

“[Soon] we will be able to offer telephone and we are looking into the possibility of ... offering a television service,” he said.
