Corn spilled in accident

March 31, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — A Columbus Road truck driver let his semitrailer get away from him Monday afternoon, spilling 800 bushels of field corn into a field. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said George Compton, 66, 6421 Columbus Road, pulling out of the driveway at his home, swung wide so the trailer woun’t go into a ditch.

The left front wheel of the truck slipped off the sharp edge of the pavement on the left. Compton attempted to steer the semitrailer into the field, but the top-heavy truck overturned.

The mishap happened at 1:50 p.m. U.S. 36 was closed for about an hour while a wrecker from Blubaugh Body & Frame pulled the truck out of the field. Traffic was rerouted via Ohio 657 and Perry Road. The road was opened at 4:30 p.m. Compton was charged with failure to drive within marked lanes.
