Local Dana plant lays off workers

FREDERICKTOWN — A sluggish economy continues to have a negative impact on the local economy. Because of a reduction of demand for leisure and utility vehicles, the Fredericktown Dana plant will be making some significant layoffs.

According to Dana spokesman Chuck Hartlage, demand for these vehicles is down by 30 percent since the fourth quarter of last year.

“Dana has reduced employment at its Fredericktown facility accordingly,” Hartlage said. ”Employment is currently about 145, down from approximately 200 in the fourth quarter [of 2008].”

This contrasts with employment figures at Dana during fiscal year 2008, when employment at the Fredericktown Dana plant went from 100 employees to 135 at the end of FY 2008.

Hartlage said Dana was not persuing any federal stimulus money at this time. He also said there would be no comment until later on about the status of company-wide
