  • Area around spill is being evacuated

  • According to Larry Hatton, public information officer for the Emergency Management Agency, residents along Ohio 13 are being evacuated following a tanker spill this afternoon. Hatton said that initially 10 families were evacuated; that number is being expanded. Members of the Fredericktown Fire Department are in the process of going from home to home of those needing to be evacuated.

    Hatton said the area is considered a hot zone and is an imminent safety threat.

    The Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up two shelters for evacuees. One is at the First Presbyterian Church, located on Main Street in Fredericktown. The other is at The Salvation Army, 206 E. Ohio Ave., Mount Vernon.

    Ohio 13 has been shut down since this afternoon, when a tanker truck carrying 41,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia overturned south of Fredericktown.
