gay street project

Cistern Found

Construction workers found a small piece of history — a cistern — at the intersection of Gay and High street Thursday morning. Paul Cline, project manager, said the cistern was from the old fire system that was abandoned when the modern one was put into place. Before there were water pumps and fire hydrants, cistern were used to retain rain water to be used for firefighting. This cistern, Cline said, is 12 feet in diameter and approximately 12 feet deep, and still held at least 7 feet of rain water. The cistern will be filled with sand and closed up.
