MOUNT VERNON — Steamy summer temperatures have arrived in Mount Vernon, and with it an increase in emergency calls for people suffering from the heat.

Mount Vernon firefighters have invited the public to help with their annual fan drive held in cooperation with Interchurch Social Services, which will distribute fans to local families who need them.

“We have conducted fan drives in the past with Interchurch,” said Shawn Christy, Mount Vernon’s fire chief. “We will be accepting new fans here at the fire station.

“With this heat, we are seeing an increase in calls with people who have difficulty breathing because of the heat,” Christy explained. “The heat can lead to medical calls and medical issues.”

Fans can be dropped off at the Mount Vernon fire station at 200 W. Gambier St.

“The Mount Vernon Firefighters Association is in the process of purchasing fans as well, and we appreciate help from the community,” Christy said.
